Amazing Night, Amazing People! All Artists Must Experience This Next Year!
So I've had the night of my life at the ETA Awards in Toronto. I won THRIVING ARTIST 2016! All your help and votes in the poll rounds have been so appreciated!
I don't like to bring up negativity, but I feel like I need to explain a bit about what happened on the weekend since there were a few negative posts on my Facebook. One artist wasn't happy with my win. Long story short, the curator of the awards told me I needed to accept the award and enjoy it and that I deserved the Award 100%!! So I'm going to!!!
We stayed at the Toronto Hilton, which was amazing in it's self!! We ate and slept like kings and queens!
I worried so much about parking the giant uhaul, but after a few rounds of neighbourhood scoping we were able to park pretty close for the night FREE! On the other hand the hotel parking for our second vehicle was $48!! Unbelievable for one night!!
I went to the Awards as Harley Quinn. The costume was a hit. One of the artists had a large painting of "Harley Quinn destroys Toronto". One of the photographers had to have the picture of me and the artist with the work. "Kind of a cool pun".
I met so many amazing, genuine, positive people. It blew me away! I was wondering when I first joined this group, if I would be an outsider, not fitting in. Instead I met so many like minded people!! I connected with them instantly, like lost brothers and sisters! So full of light!
I had the most wonderful evening in spite of the previous glitch, that I would love to volunteer next year to help in the festivities. I would love more artists from this area to apply, to exhibit, and to experience what I had the honour to experience Friday night!!!
Here's the artwork I was honoured to be photographed with!!
Come Support Me at The ETA Awards!
As the ETA awards narrow in on 2 weeks away, there have been many things that I need to prepare for. Being the Awards are in downtown, congested, wall to wall trafic Toronto, much preparation regarding transportation of my work, hotel rooms, costumes, and many other details need to be addressed.
I've rented a pretty big uhaul to transport my art. This seems all fine and dandy until you start thinking about details. Such as, where the f*** do you park the thing when the gala is going on. It's hard enough to find a space for a car, can you imagine a 26 foot truck? Super stressing about that one!! Plus where do you unload such a big payload at the venue?? Is there loading docks? Large enough doors for my work? And not to mention, how to secure the sculptures in the cabin so they won't get damaged. All to be worked out on location I guess!! STRESSING!!
Now the gala is super hero themed! The artists are to be dressed up like super heroes (which we are) lol. I've decided not to go with a traditional superhero costume but to vary from the norm. If anyone knows me, I'm an ARMY GIRL! Who is more than deserving of the title SUPER HERO than a member of the army? A REAL LIFE SUPERHERO!
Everyone has been asking me if I've made the final 3 for THRIVING ARTIST. Answer is... I don't know. Nothing has been posted on the status. And to be honest with you, it's been driving me crazy!!!
So if your looking for something to do OCTOBER 21st. Come join me and my newly found friends for an evening of superheroes and art. And if I make the final 3 for Thriving Artist, you may join in for a LIVE VOTE, to help me try to secure the title!!

SW, ETA, QEW, And WTF?
The other night I headed up to Toronto to the SW (Super Wonder Gallery) for the preshow of the ETA awards. This was the "meet and greet" for the participating artists. It was also a gallery showing of all the nominated art for the awards. The peacock was representing me for THRIVING ARTIST and the horse head DAUNTLESS was nominated for the category "Innovation". The night was unlike anything I had ever participated in. People were dancing, drinking and having fun. I've always thought that a gallery showing would be stuffy, reserved and nerve racking. Quite the contrary! I forgot my Michael Kors and my Gucci at home, and it didn't matter!! It was a night of live music, live painting, and helpful seminars. The other artists were friendly and non competitive. Not what I expected at all! I really met some new friends!
And now the funniest story of the night. Driving home on the QEW we came up on a massive traffic jam. The signs were showing construction and the lanes were barely moving. At one point we sat in the middle lane for 20 minutes without moving! What is going on up ahead? An accident? Construction? We nudged along for an infinite amount of time. I started thinking about all the cars piling up behind us. By this time the traffic must be backed up to Pickering! Cars slowly started moving from the centre lane into the left lane. I decided to make the move to the left. We finally inched our way past what was holding the entire city up... A guy asleep, head back mouth open asleep, in his truck in the middle lane!!! Ok now wait, it gets better...so Now we were moving along a little better but it was still slow do to the construction pylons. About 5 minutes later a truck goes zipping by in the blocked off construction area. Whizzing by the entire traffic jam and butting in after he had gone as far as he could. Yep! The guy woke up! It was him!
Glitz and Glitter
This is MIKAYLA ECHO! Driftwood dolphin with wave. She's so sparkly! She's been glittered up from tail to nose with sparkles! My second attempt to alter the natural look of the driftwood. The first time was when I built the ALBINO RHINO for the albino rhino beer review desk. I painted the rino head with gloss white and it turned out amazing!
I named this sparkly dolphin after a little young lady that has been very helpful collecting driftwood for me. I wanted to do something different, special and girlie for this honourable name! She also has come to my house and has had a tour of "sculpture land". She's a dedicated follower and loves my work! She's an artist too! She does some pretty fabulous stuff for a young girl and I hope to be a great roll model for her. Her name is MIKAYLA BATEMAN. You can find her art page on Facebook at this link:

Future's So Bright I've Gotta Wear Shades!
So I placed 2nd in the 2nd round of voting for THRIVING ARTIST. Eight of us are moving onto round 3, the gallery round at The Super Wonder Gallery in Toronto. This is where my piece "EGYPT" the driftwood peacock will represent me. And "DAUNTLESS" The driftwood horse head, with sea treasures, will be judged for my nomination for the INNOVATION AWARD. This preshow is open to the public with a minimum entrance fee, so if your bored come support me, Friday night, Sept 23rd!
Also today I rolled the bones and mailed my application in for the ONE OF A KIND SHOW. fingers crossed I get accepted!
Falling behind...Time to call in the heavy hitters!!!!
So my THRIVING ARTIST VOTE is going quite well, however, I'm behind a bit for first place. I sat thinking this morning at how I was gonna increase my votes. I'm slowly dwindling behind Alex Scovino, what should I do? What is my biggest online asset? INSTAGRAM!!! At over 2800 followers, I should be able to make up some ground!! Now there is some cons to this plan...first of all they are strangers and don't know you personally, next, you can't attach a Facebook link or web link to your photos, it has to be on your page. Next is to get them to look at your page and see the link. After that you need them to log into Facebook to vote. It's a lot of hoops for them to jump through!!! Crossing fingers that this works!!!
And in case you haven't voted, here's the link:
Currently 41 lengths behind first!
The second round of voting for THRIVING ARTIST in Toronto is going down as we speak! It started yesterday and I was out of the gates fast!! Feeling very confident with 20 votes ahead of a guy "Alex Scovino". I've never heard of him, but googled his name and seems to be a known artist in the area. Toronto, and it seems Venezuela, obviously has his back, now leading with 41 votes ahead of me. To say the least, I'm nervous because I have 2 other artists also on my heals. Help from everyone is needed. We need to show Toronto, that the Niagara area means business! Please help by voting every day for me and my driftwood peacock, through Facebook. This will mean a lot to me to qualify for the finals for the ETA Awards! The peacock will then be shown in a gallery in Toronto, which would mean great exposure for me! It only takes less than a minute to vote!! If everyone votes just once a day until Sept 9th I should qualify!!! ❤️😘
Below is the beautifulwork of Alex Scovino,
as you see I have my work cut out for me!!
Here is the link to vote:
Jack Sparrow is pretty close to being finished. I've got him done except his hat. I've torn his hat apart 5 times, and yes it's gonna be torn apart again! Why is this such a hard thing for me? Lol. I do intricate faces!! Not sure what my problem is. As usual you will have to wait to see him in his entirety. He stands at 5'10". He's in a fighting stance holding his sword. I did all the details!!! I researched his outfit and if you look carefully I'm not missing a thing. Compass, guns, belts, scars, sashes, beads, rings, all the gadgets! (And yes, a pirate hat soon!) he's a complete Jack Sparrow!
I named him BRILLIANTLY MAD! Do to my favorite quote from the movie.
If you remember the scene in the beginning of the first movie "Curse of the Black Pearl", Jack and Will are walking under water to steal a ship. They are using a small boat upside down holding in the air so they can breathe while they are walking on the bottom of the ocean.
“This is either madness, or brilliance.” (Will Turner) “It’s remarkable how often those two traits coincide.” – Jack Sparrow.
Jack is either MADLY BRILLIANT or BRILLIANTLY MAD!!
Getting Ready Already.
I just checked online a day ago and found the application for the One Of A Kind Show. To my surprise the application deadline is September 23rd for the Spring Show. In the next few weeks I have to build an application package. Now some of you think... Just fill out the form! Let me tell you what they want:
- a biography stating how I got started, where I've show cased. What I've sold. And my education and training in art.
- a step by step product description and how my pieces are built and who helps me.
- detailed plans of my booth (that I haven't even built yet). Placement, lighting, walls, flooring, signage.
- pictures of items to be sold.
- price lists
- I'm applying for a NEW ARTISAN SCHOLARSHIP, which entails a written assignment stating why I could benefit from the program.
- photos of my studio
- a $500 deposit
- and the filled out application to boot!
So I've been at this for 2 days straight!! This is by far the biggest investment I have had when it comes to this dream. I'm figuring that when this is all said and done it will have cost me 7 grand!!! Cross your fingers everyone that I get the Scholarship! This will alleviate 50% off the booth, which will probably run me $4000-5000 (depending on the size and location they give me). 😉
So like they say in poker "I'm all in!"
And speaking of poker, gotta go! Off to my real job at the Casino to pay for all this!!!
Calling on you, for round 2!!!
Round 1 for THRIVING ARTIST was a success for me. I ranked in the top 16 that will move onto the second round of voting, via Favebook, to start Sept 3rd to the 9th. Now I'm not sure where exactly I placed in the top 16, but if it's according to the order posted on the ETA round 1 winner list, I came in 6th.
This does make me a little nervous, because only 8 make it to the gallery round. I really need everyone's support on this next vote! If I make it to the gallery round, then my work will speak for itself. It's far more impressive for judges to see the sculpture in real life. Sheer size is breath taking. The photo of the driftwood peacock is just not impressive enough. According to the ETA rules I was not allowed a background in my photo, which alone helps to state its size, I had to blur the background, and in my opinion, it's hard to even know it's a sculpture.
So everyone, I'm calling on you!! Take a minute to vote when the polls open!! I need everyone I can get!!!!❤️
